Social Media Monitoring: If you’re not listening, how can you talk?

The topic for our July 8th Social Media Club Phoenix is a look at Social Media Monitoring, taken from our Uservoice forum.  If you really want to be part of the conversation about your company or brand, you need to listen to what others are saying about you. Different tools can help with either casual or serious monitoring, allowing even small businesses without a dedicated social media group to participate. It may take time to learn to filter out the noise from the information, but once it is done monitoring is a critical piece of any social media implementation..

Social Media 101 (ad hoc)

Our usual Social Media 101 instructor is off on a vacation this week, so we will be having the SM 101, just not an agenda.  Jeff Moriarty will be covering the session, and taking any questions and topics for consideration. The sessions are always engaging and enjoyable, so stop on by.

SM101 starts at 5:30pm. Because we only have about 45 minutes for the class plus a Q & A session, please be on time. The class will end at 6:15, giving everyone plenty of time to make it to the main SMCPHX meeting that starts promptly at 6:30.

Mashable’s Social Media Day recap

Last month Mashable declared June 30th to be Social Media Day, encouraging people around the world to meet and connect around social media. While there are already a lot of great social media related events in Phoenix, an enterprising group of people and sponsors came together at the MADCAP theaters in Tempe.

We had over 100 people show up, and shared swapped ideas with the Tucson meetup via Skype.  We gave away some prizes donated by local businesses, shared some of the best local social happenings in Phoenix, and networked to some local music for several hours. For coming together on just a few days notice, it was a lot of fun! We are looking at doing these more network-oriented “Social Media Days” in the future, incorporating a lot of feedback and really making it a fun venue to connect with other SM practitioners across the Valley.

We’re going to do something a bit different at the May 13th Social Media Club Phoenix, and have a bit of an Open House.  I get a lot of questions offline about the intent behind the group, where it is going, how people can get involved, etc., and it’s just not practical to cover them all individually.  Plus, then I don’t get the benefit of discussion between different members of the group. and their perspectives.  So it seemed like a good time to have a chat.

Open House: SMC Phoenix for the next year

I am really looking for this to be an open discussion with people who attend either frequently or even just once before. What will make SMC Phoenix more valuable to you over the next year?  Below is my rough agenda, but I’d love to hear feedback on other topics you would like to discuss:

• Social Media Club Phoenix – What are the club’s objectives?
• Topic Panels – We’ve been pondering some small changes to the format – how can we make them more valuable?
• Member Involvement & Sharing – How do we get more people participating and sharing in the club? What should the expectation be?
• Member Resources - The Google Group isn’t used much, but the Uservoice forum has worked well. We’re also looking at a member directory. What else should we explore, add, or change?
• Events & Meetups – Is there interest in more?  On what topics?
• SM101 & Classes – We have a lot of demand for offering training material, but many people want it for free. What can we reasonably offer?  Should we be looking at this at all?
• Guest Blogs – Is there interest in blogging on the SMC Phoenix blog to make it more valuable for content in its own right?
• What else…? – What else would you like to see from SMC Phoenix?
• Q & A – If we have time, we’ll have an open Q&A on social media topics.  Anything goes. Though we have a lot to cover so I wouldn’t bank on this too heavily.

I’d appreciate help in spreading the word to get people to come down and get involved in the discussion.  This will help shape the club for the next year, and your input is very much appreciated!

This Thursday, April 22^nd we’re partnering with Raising Arizona Kids magazine to host a special event for parents to help them ensure their children are safe online. We’ll talk about the popular social networking tools and how they can be safely used, what information profiles contain and how to implement privacy settings. Additionally, we’ll go beyond the safety concerns and talk about the benefits of having your children online and listen to the panelists’ own experiences and how they have set boundaries within their families.

The parents who need this the most are more likely to not be online. Help us reach them by emailing everyone you know who could benefit from this session. To assist you with getting the word out we’ve placed a simple email text on the Social Media for Parents page for you to use – just copy/paste and hit send.

A Twestival or Twitter-Festival is a global series of events organized by volunteers around the world under short timescales, which bring people offline for a great cause. The proceeds from Twestival will be supporting Concern Worldwide. Concern has been bringing education to the world’s poorest children through innovative programs and solutions for over 40 years.

Last year Brian Shaler made a great tool that listed everyone who was attending South By Southwest Interactive (SXSWi) from the Phoenix area.  Arizona was well represented at SXSW, and the site helped everyone see where their friends were, what was going on, and keep on top of the great things local people were up to in Austin.

With the creation of Twitter Lists, this is a lot easier. We’ve made a list of Arizona people attending SXSW in 2010.  If you’re going but aren’t on the list yet, leave a comment here or send a reply to @SMCPhoenix and we’ll add you.  Then when you’re in Austin you can just go to this page to see what all your local people are saying and doing around town.

We’re looking forward to seeing what great stuff comes out of SXSW this year, so will do some sharing and exchanging at the April Social Media Club Phoenix!

BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE: How Social Should Governments Be Online

On one hand, Governments exist to serve the people, so you might expect Social Media to be an easy engagement for them to make.  Unfortunately, things like open meeting laws, limited budgets, and stressed resources can make it a challenge.  We’re seeing unprecedented use of Social Media at the National level, both in the Presidential Campaigns and with a growing number of officials, but is it starting to trickle down to the local level?  YouTube has pulled together videos for the President to answer – could virtual town halls become the norm?  What about using Social Media for greater access to Government information and resources?

This is a huge topic, and I encourage everyone to come down and participate in this discussion. You do not need to be personally working with Government entities to have good ideas and input for the panel. This is an area of Social Media that does not get as much discussion as business applications, but is in some ways even more important to all of us.

Instead of a normal panel meeting on November 12th, the Social Media Club Phoenix will be joining a mixer at the AZ Entrepreneurship Conference. Many people in SMC are attending the conference itself, but everyone else welcome to the mixer free of charge at 5:30pm.  It is a great chance to network and chat with other local professionals.  Our panel format will resume at Jobing.com offices in December.

The conference (#AZEC09) will be at the Desert Willow Conference Center, 4340 El Cotton Center Blvd in Phoenix.  Hope to see you all there!

For example, many attendees at the recent Social Media AZ (SMAZ) conference talked about the need for Social Media professionals to network more often – totally unaware that SMC meets every month. We all benefit  from hearing new ideas, experiences, and perspectives, so are hoping you can help us spread the word.

At Social Media Club we highly value collaboration. We aim to bring together people of different levels of social media experience with a variety of backgrounds to share their knowledge and expertise in all forms of conversational media. Since you are here we’re thinking that you probably get it. Do you?  If you do, then help us spread the word by sharing it with who you know: they can fan us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, subscribe via email, join our Google group and give their opinion on what they think we should be talking about next on UserVoice.

If you are finding this site for the first time, we meet the 2nd Thursday of every month at 6:30pm.
