Netiquette

The worst has happened. Someone has threatened a blogger with death, in the spirit of “free speech.” I think this might re-empt whatever else we want to talk about through the Social Media Club. Read Kathy Sierra’s blog and tell me what you think.

First let me say that the sort of behavior exhibited towards Kathy is over the line. I would defend her to the death. I do not condone such behavior and have never permitted it in my presence.
I have read Kathy’s post several times. I have read Chris’ post several times. I may be missing something, but I think that Chris Locke is being unfairly tarred here.
Yes, Kathy has been threatened and subjected to some pretty vile invictive.
Yes, some of it appeared on two blogs that Chris was involved with. To infer from this that Chris was responsible for the threats themelves is pretty lame.
Yes, Chris has a responsibility not to condone/support such behavior. It used to be that the Gentleman always defended the Lady. Our offline culture has shifted a bit and some Ladies take offense at being defended, feeling that they are able to take care of themselves. Now it is more acceptable to defend the Lady only if/when she wants defended. I that vein, Chris pulled the plug on UncleBobism the instant he was aware she had an issue with the content.

Here is someone who expresses my opnion on this subject far more eloquently than I:

Yes, Dave, you are probably right about the character assassination. I just read some of the Blogher posts and comments. But I also think there’s an issue of netiquette that people need to be aware of as the blogosphere grows.

But the issue of netiquette applies to Kathy too. Prior to the internet, Kathy’s unfounded accusation would have had a very limited audience. Make that same accusation on your blog and this sort of thing happens:
